Medication administration policy

1.0 Purpose

To provide all necessary information about allergies or any serious conditions a child has, and to explain the process of medication handling and administration.

2.0 Procedures

  • Parents are to sign the medication consent form in the admissions booklet and to make the setting aware of any allergies and intolerances.
  • The person authorized to administer any medication while at the nursery is the nurse only.
  • Medication must not be administered unless they have been prescribed by a doctor.
  • First dose of new medication shall not be started in the nursery.
  • Medications must be properly labeled with child’s name, dosage, and expiration date.
  • Staff should receive medication from parents and take all medication out of the child(ren) bag to be put in the appropriate storage allocated in the nurse’s clinic.
  • If a child is ill enough to need medication not due to any illness, or present any COVID-19 signs and symptoms he/she should rest at home until a doctor’s clearance has been received.
  • The nurse must record all medication administered to children in the Medication Administration Record.
  • Medication for any chronic illnesses such as Insulin for Diabetes Type 1 shall be administered by the nurse as per the child’s protocol.
  • The protocol must be provided by parents and can be subject to change as per the child’s condition with the doctor’s approval.
